Orwell is my favorite nonfiction writer and his shorter, less-remembered pieces are as brilliant as his longer work. But it's worth pointing out what he got wrong, and this take in "You and the Atom Bomb" is a doozy: "... ages in which the dominant weapon is expensive or difficult to make will tend to be ages of despotism, whereas when the dominant weapon is cheap and simple, the common people have a chance."

We're in the midst of an age when across much of the poor world the dominant weapon is the AK-47, as cheap and easy to obtain as can be, and it turns out that the common people have almost no chance against the warlords and paramilitaries.

Thanks, Andy - I've not heard of most of these.
